The Spotsylvania Volunteer fire department held the annual officer installation ceremony and awards banquet Saturday January 28, 2017 at Stevenson Ridge near Spotsylvania Courthouse. The evening kicked off with a short video capturing call from the 2016 year a salute to lifetime member Bob Janzen who had passed earlier in the year.
After a meal prepared by Pifer Bros. BBQ Company the program started with a speech from retiring Spotsylvania Department of Fire and Emergency management Chief Monte Willaford spoke and thanked everyone for their support and hard work during his time as the county fire chief. The crowd came to a standing ovation when Chief Willaford announced that he would return to Spotsylvania and join the ranks of the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department. After that Acting Fire Chief Jay Cullinan offered words of encouragement going into the New Year.
The night continued with officer installations and awards presentation. SVFD made an announcement that they would be purchasing the revolutionary FireDex H41 Interceptor Hoods for each of the award winners. This would be the first large order for the new hood that will help promote health and safety for our members.
Several members were recognized for their work on 3 different CPR Saves in all 3 districts covered by SVFD,
Firefighter Francisco Flores was recognized as Rookie of the year and Lt. Matt McGhee took home Firefighter of the year honors.
The night was capped off my words of encouragement my Chief Brooks challenging each person to challenge themselves and help grow our department as we head in to the new year.
