With deep sorrow, we announce the “Final Alarm” of Our Chief, Norman Brooks. Norman was greatly loved by our department and community and will be severely missed.
Chief Brook’s contributions to the Citizens of Spotsylvania County was unparalleled. He served our community and positively impacted lives for the past 47 years in our system. His love of the fire service was unmeasurable, He mentored generations of volunteer and career firefighters across the region. This loss will be felt by the many fire and EMS members he served alongside for almost half a century. Chief Brooks had a contagious laugh, a heart for the community, and was regularly described as a “Firefighter’s Chief” because of the passion he maintained for responding to emergencies and helping those he worked with.
Firefighter Matt McGee said it best “Still can’t believe it! You were more than just a chief to me, a role model, an inspiration, someone I looked up to! You helped shape me into the man I am today! There was never a dull moment with you! You were always there for me for anything I needed treated me like family! I can’t thank you enough Chief!
Originally joining as a volunteer firefighter April 4th,1972, Chief Brooks was one of the first four career firefighters hired by Spotsylvania County in 1981. Over the years, Chief Brooks moved up through the ranks of the career and volunteer agencies, he retired as a Battalion Chief with Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management. He assumed the reins as the Sixth Chief of the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department in 2013.
