Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department recognizes Acting Lieutenant Dan Outlaw for the month of October. Dan joined Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department in 2017. Dan was Rookie Firefighter of the Year for 2018 and he was recently recognized as Firefighter of the Year for 2019.

Dan started his volunteer service in Spotsylvania County with Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad. He held the position of Assistant Chief for seven years before transitioning to the fire service. Dan currently assists Captain David McDonald at Four Mile Fork Company 4 with managing the company and ensuring personnel and equipment is ready to respond to any emergency.

Dan became intrigued with the fire department during his years working side by side with volunteer and career fire service members. Dan enjoyed serving the community as an EMS provider but wanted to do more.

Dan has been in the hospitality industry for twenty years, currently managing a hotel. When Dan is not working his full-time job or spending time with his family, he volunteers to assist the residents of Spotsylvania County.

Dan has many fond memories of his time with Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department. Dan's best times are in the station, being around others that enjoy helping the community. Dan's fondest memory was the opportunity that him and the crew of Company 4 had last year to meet a resident that they performed CPR on a couple months earlier. They spent time with the resident and his family sharing stories and learning more about their family. A majority of the emergency calls we respond to are medical related. As first responders we rarely know the outcome of an emergency after the patient is taken to the hospital, however, we followed this gentleman's recovery closely and it was an indescribable feeling to be able to meet him and know that we assisted in giving him more time with his family.

Dan's advice to someone who wants to become a firefighter; “Being a firefighter, volunteer or career, is not a hobby. It takes a great deal of training, dedication, and a whole lot of time. It is time away from family and personal life. But, if you really want to make a difference, if you really have that dedication and drive, go for it. Just make sure you give it your all. Training is hard, but if you make the most of it, you will have some of the best times of your life. Being a firefighter and being able to serve my community is the most rewarding thing I have ever done and is second only to my family.”

Without volunteers like Dan Outlaw’s dedication to community service, the community could not receive the assistance that is expected when calling 911.
